Dewa executing major power, water projects
Some major power transmission projects costing more than Dh8 billion are being implemented by the Dubai Electricity and Water and Authority (Dewa) to meet the growing electricty needs of the expanding city, according to Dewa CEO Saeed Al Tayer.
The projects include 34 ransmission stations of 132KVA capacity costing of Dh6.806 billion and and high-tension cables costing Dh1.946 billion, he told Khaleej Times in an interview.
Al Tayer also said that Dewa would install four main transmission stations of 400KVA capacity during the next five years along with 25 main transmission stations of 132KVA capacity. In addition, work on a hundred kilometres of transmission cables of 132KVA and high-tension cables of 400KVA will be completed.
He said Dewa is executing a number of water supply projects as well. These include water supply lines with a total length of 150km to improve supply water from Jebel Ali power station to various areas in Dubai.
“To increase the water capacity, DEWA is set to construct water desalination projects in addition to water transmission, water distribution and water tanks projects,” he said.
Al Tayer explained that the total cost of water supply projects currently under way is estimated to be around Dh1 billion .
Dewa will invite a tender within a few weeks for water supply projects.
In addition, a number of projects are being undertaken to raise the water storage capacity as part of Dewa's strategic plans to store sufficient water for daily consumption. Water tanks with a capacity of 60 million gallons are being built in Jebel Ali. Water tanks with a capacity of 5 million gallons will be provided in Allisily and Hatta. The water storage capacity in all tanks would reach 300 million gallons.
Dewa will also construct three more water tanks in Mushrif area which will be completed within 18 months increasing Dewa storage capacity to 480 million gallons. In addition, Dewa will also construct two water tanks in Al Gafat area on the Dubai Ring Road with a total capacity of 60 million gallons.
Al Tayer pointed out that Dewa would also expand its water supply networks in the next few years to provide and meet the growing demands for water in Dubai. For this purpose, water supply network with a total length 1000km will be bulit in Dubai at a total cost of Dh325 million.
Dewa has a number of ongoing water pump projects, and is currently executing four water pump projects at a total cost of Dh120 million. Three of them are in Hata with a total capacity of 30 million gallons and the fourth is in Dubai with a capacity of 60 million gallons.
During the year 2008, DEWA will execute three water pump projects with a capacity of 60 million gallons.
The second phase of water desalination project in Jebel Ali at a total cost of Dh3.4 billion and a total capacity of 1283MW electricity and 55 million water gallons will be executed by the second quarter of the year 2008.
The third water desalination in Al Aweer station (H) costing Dh1,635 billion and with a total capacity of 800MW will be completed during the summer of 2008.
The power supply and water desalination station (M) at a total cost of Dh10 billion and production capacity of 2000MW and 140 million water gallons, respectively, will be completed in two phases in 2009 and 2010. Al Tayer said that the future projects in power generation and water desalination in Ras Hisyan wouldinclude three main stations that will be executed in six phases and the first phase will be launched in the year 2012.
