The Dubai World Cup one of the racing world’s biggest and most exciting events

The Dubai World Cup is more than just an excuse to dress up and buy a new hat. It has become one of the racing world’s biggest and most exciting events since its debut in 1996 at Nad Al Sheba Racing Club. Thirteen years later, the event is more popular than ever and attracts visitors from the world over.

About 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the races, which will take place next saturday. The event comprises seven races of varying purses totalling $21.25 million (Dh77.9m). The richest is the Dubai World Cup race at $6m. Chief supporting races are the $5m Dubai Duty Free and the $5m Dubai Sheema Classic, also two of the richest races run on turf in the world, followed by the Dubai Golden Shaheen, the UAE Derby, the Godolphin Mile and the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians.

Racegoers can win big on the horses by participating in two official Dubai World Cup competitions: Pick 7 and Tricast. With Pick 7, all you need to do is to choose the winners of all seven races to win large cash prizes. There are also prizes on offer for hitting six, five and four winners. Entry forms are located at each gate. The Tricast contest also offers cash prizes and requires you to select the first three placegetters in the official order of finish for two consecutive races.

Of course, no trip is complete without a fabulous outfit. The dress code is lounge suit or national dress for men, while modest dress and fancy hats are recommended for women. Source

Ingham Bloodstock, has been sold to the Dubai-owned Darley Stud

In a major shake up of the racing industry, Australia's biggest horse breeding empire, Ingham Bloodstock, has been sold to the Dubai-owned Darley Stud, in a business deal reported to be worth at least half a billion dollars.

A chicken farmer first, Bob Ingham, created the bloodstock enterprise with brother Jack after inheriting a brood mare when their father Walter died more than 50 years ago.

The Ingham's racing dynasty has dominated the track for a generation, owning the biggest breeding facility in the country, employing seven thousand people and breeding some of our country's best loved champions.

Over the passed decade, the Ingham's association with trainer John Hawkes has seen the stable claim almost 60 Group One winners.

In 2007, Bob Ingham was the biggest buyer at the Easter Yearling sale and a couple of years earlier paid a then record $2,5 million for Makybe Diva's little brother who now races as Musket.

Sweet Embrace, the 1967 winner of the Golden Slipper, was the Ingham Stable's favourite, only challenged 30 years later by Octagonal, who won the 1995 Cox Plate and the following month won a staggering four Group One races in less than a month.

Darley, which is owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, will take over the Woodlands stud and training properties, and hundreds of racehorses, stallions and broodmares.

The sale is subject to approval by the Foreign Investment Board.

International interest in Arabian horses draws visitors to Dubai

Global interest in the Middle East’s fast-growing equestrian sector, and in the grace and speed of Arabian horses in particular, has driven the Dubai International Horse Fair (DIHF) to become the largest event of its kind in the region.

Expectations are high that the exhibition will draw the highest number of international visitors in its history, when it runs from 20-22 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, alongside the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship (DIAHC). Over a quarter of visitors last year came from Europe, Asia and Africa and the organiser Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) is confident it can build on this record of global success.

On display will be many leading international manufacturers and distributors of saddles, horse feed, supplements and hay, stable equipment and trailers, medical supplies, and equine massage.

Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, DIHF has quickly developed a strong reputation as an important networking and business development platform for companies and professionals in the industry.

Abdulla Quassem, Board Member, Higher Organising Committee of Dubai International Horse Fair and Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship, said: “The Dubai International Horse Fair serves the diverse equestrian community of the whole region and is an increasingly important date for the global industry. For visitors, there will be the opportunity to meet not only with suppliers and manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors, but also with a large number of international stud and stable owners as well as breeders of Arabian and Thoroughbred horses. There is no other event that brings the whole industry together.”

Presenting their successful breeds in DIHF are, among others, Ajman Stud, Al Naif Stud (Qatar) Cavalry of Oman, Frison (France), Shadwell (Dubai) and Sharjah Stud.

Over the three days, guests will be able to see Arabian horses in competition at the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship. For 2008, total prize money set by HH Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum will be a staggering US$4 million, making it one of the richest competitions of its kind. Horses will enter from the Americas, Europe, GCC and UAE.

One of the major highlights for visitors is the opportunity to buy horses in the two day auction for Arabians and Thoroughbreds by Al Faisal Stud. Over 200 horses will be auctioned and participants can enter a raffle draw to win a horse.

Another successful feature at DIHF is the veterinarian seminars and exhibitor presentations. These are held to support the industry for animal welfare and wellbeing, by bringing together regional and international experts in horse-care to discuss new developments in treatment and therapy. The event is one of the only cross-regional opportunities for specialists to meet and discuss new breakthroughs, and is set to attract leading experts.

Admission to DIHF is free of charge and open to trade and consumers. Persons under the age of 16 do not need to complete the registration form, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Source

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed unveiled Maydan - New Racecourse in Dubai

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed unveiled a model of the new project Meydan Racecourse. During the last night’s unveiling extravaganza at the Madinat Jumeirah, no specifics were released. The official announcement is scheduled at Nad al Sheba prior to today Dubai World Cup card.
According to the published reports, Meydan Racecourse would seat up to 80,000 patrons and include a parking facility for 10,000 vehicles. It would be completed by 2010 and racing at Nad al Sheba would continue uninterrupted during the construction period.
Named Meydan (Arabic for “new challenge”) the complex would apparently replace the Nad al Sheba racecourse in Dubai that will host the 12th annual Dubai World Cup Saturday. The present facility will accommodate about 45,000 to 50,000 Saturday.
The new facility, for which details are expected to be announced prior to the World Cup card Saturday, would apparently handle many more patrons than that.
With no official announcement, the unveiling was an entertaining affair, replete with ceremonial dancers and fireworks. A video preface into the unveiling showed horses racing while the Olympic fanfare theme John Williams composted for the Olympics played in the background, leading to speculation that Dubai may make a bid to host the Olympics.
Despite the lack of details and only a look at facility onlookers, including many U.S. owners and breeders, were impressed with what they saw.
The proposed complex, which would include a myriad of housing options, would be located at a site farther outside the city of Dubai than is the current racetrack.

The Horse Races Preview

This Saturday, horses from the six inhabitable continents will converge on Nad al Sheba for the world's richest day of horse racing, the Dubai World Cup. Seven races will offer a combined $21.25 million in purse money with 14 American-based horses vying for supremacy against 68 other entrants from all corners of the world.
Nad al Sheba is very different from the typical racetrack. Seven miles from downtown Dubai, the roads leading to the track are littered with signs warning drivers to stay alert for the occasional camel crossing.
As the absence of one major feature - gambling is a fact, there are no betting windows, no losing tickets blanketing the floor as is so often the case at a local track. No bookmakers touting their odds, a common sight at every racecourse in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Gambling is not allowed in the United Arab Emirates and no one in Dubai seems to mind the lack of opportunity to place a wager.
Saturday's feature race, the $6 million Dubai World Cup, is led by Invasor, the reigning American Horse of the Year, and the undefeated colt, Discreet Cat. Invasor is owned by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum while his brother, the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum owns Discreet Cat. Five other contenders will take their chance to knock off the two top choices. The field of seven will be the smallest in the 12-year history of the race.
Invasor's conditioner, American trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, noted Wednesday at the post position draw that a win in the Dubai World Cup would be the biggest victory of his career.
Discreet Cat has just six lifetime starts, but one of them was a seven-length triumph one year ago in the United Arab Emirates Derby, where he handed Invasor his only lifetime defeat.
Premium Tap, viewed as the third-choice in the Dubai World Cup, spent the majority of his career in America before being purchased by King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia and shipped to Riyadh. King Abdullah retained Premium Tap's American trainer and jockey, John Kimmel and Kent Desormeaux, to keep a familiar training regimen in place leading up to the single most lucrative race in the world.
Horses based in America will compete in five of the seven races, representing the largest contingent to make the long journey to Dubai.
Fan favorite Lava Man will make his second start outside of the United States when he goes in the $5 million Dubai Duty Free on the turf.
Americans filled the first five positions at the finish of the 2006 Dubai Golden Shaheen, the six-furlong dirt sprint race on the World Cup card, and five more will attempt to do it again in the 2007 version.
Kelly's Landing, owner of the six-furlong track record at Churchill Downs, has drawn favorably in the third stall in the gate. Trainer Todd Pletcher, whose horses earned over $26 million in 2006, has two entrants in the Golden Shaheen in the form of Bishop Court Hill and Friendly Island.
Trainer Doug O'Neill has Harvard Avenue poised to run a big one in the Golden Shaheen. The son of You And I has trained exceptionally well in the mornings at Nad al Sheba and couldn't be coming into the race looking any better. Nightmare Affair, a Florida-based Golden Shaheen contender, has raced his entire career without the bleeder medication Lasix, and his connections feel that will be an added advantage as Lasix is not permitted in Dubai.
Pletcher has two longshots going in the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic, a 1 1/2-mile turf race with 15 entries bred in 10 different countries. A spectacular cast has been assembled, which includes 2006 Breeders' Cup Turf champion Red Rocks, making his first start since the big American victory, along with England's Vodafone Derby winner Sir Percy and Collier Hill, the well-traveled winner of the 2006 Canadian International at Woodbine.
California-based Dixie Meister and Spring At Last will represent the stars and stripes in the $1 million Godolphin Mile. Dixie Meister's trainer, Julio Canani, has had success in this race in the past taking the 2000 version with Ladies Din.

The Dubai World Cup Art Auction raised over Dh 1 million

Over Dh1 million was raised at the first Dubai World Cup Art Auction held last night, with some of the proceeds pledged towards a local school for underprivileged children.
The worlds of racing and art came together for the event at Madinat Jumeirah which featured specially commissioned paintings of the last eleven winners of the Dubai World Cup.
The highest bid went to a painting by Bahraini artist Mohammad Abdul Latif Kanoo of Dubai Millennium - the Godolphin horse which won the 2000 Dubai World Cup. Frenzied bidding resulted in the piece going for $65,000 (Dh238,667) to an undisclosed buyer. As the artist whose work went for the highest price, Kanoo will be commissioned to paint this year's winner, which will be decided on Saturday at the Dubai World Cup. Bidding for the painting of the 2007 winner came to $55,000.
The event was organised by Art Connection and Dubai Racing Club, with Art Connection's Yousuf Ali Bin Zayed saying they hoped to make it an annual event.

Eleven artists from around the world have been commissioned to create and exhibit a piece that represents each of the 11 winners of the Dubai World Cup. The Races, The 5 million Sheema Classic on March 31 & Sir Percy

Sir Percy has arrived fit and well in Dubai ahead of his bid for glory in the 5million Sheema Classic on March 31.
Last season's Derby hero has pleased trainer Marcus Tregoning in preparation for the valuable event and has already enjoyed a stretch of his legs on the Nad Al Sheba track.
Sir Percy proved a major disappointment when well beaten behind Pride in the Champion Stakes last October but Tregoning expects him to bounce back in 2007.
The turf track (at Nad Al Sheba) certainly rides extremely well.
