Donate toys and make a difference

The Mother, Baby and Child Show Abu Dhabi calls on people to help make a difference by donating toys to autistic children.

Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, affecting an estimated 1 in 146 births. A simple donation of a toy, book or game at the Mother, Baby and Child Show (MBC) in Abu Dhabi, will help to brighten an autistic child’s life and help raise funds for the Gulf Autism Centre based in Abu Dhabi.

Children need toys and books to develop necessary motor skills, says the US National Institute for Early Education Research. Studies also show that infant toys are critical for brain growth that affects learning later in life and play is essential for all children to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives,.

Most children receive an abundance of gifts during birthdays and festive occasions, many of which get put away in a cupboard and never used. Encourage your child to share and re-gift one of their many presents or at least ask you children to donate toys they have outgrown, if those toys are in good condition or still in their original packaging.

“This year we also wanted to help make a difference to the lives of children in need, which is why we are launching our special donation drive for the Gulf Autism Centre, as well as our ongoing support to the Make a Wish Foundation.” says Shannon Norris, Events Director for TME, the organisers of the MBC Show:
People who wish to donate can drop off their toy donation at the Mother, Baby and Child Show which will take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on 29-31 May 2008. As a way of saying thank you, parents will receive a free entry ticket per family.

Now in its second year in Abu Dhabi, the MBC show offers plenty of free advice as well as the latest in childcare products, goods and services for everyone from parents-to-be through to parents with children up to the age of eight.
“As well as parental and medical advice, there is plenty for children at the show including appearances from their favourite TV characters, entertainment, play areas, goodie bags and bundles of fun,” adds Norris.

“Other highlights this year include a Fashion Show by Babyshop, with clothes modeled by children from the Gulf Autism Centre. To celebrate our first birthday, children born between 29-31 May 2007 will also be invited to join us on stage for cake, games and gifts.”

The special draw at the show will offer a star prize of 2 return tickets to New Zealand courtesy of Air New Zealand, as well as many other fabulous prizes.

The Mother, Baby and Child Show Abu Dhabi is expected to attract 150 exhibitors this year. An impressive 15,000 visitors visited the show in 2007 and TME, the show organisers, are expecting a great turnout again this year. Five major trade shows opened in Dubai

The consumer electronics sector has emerged as a key growth industry in the Middle East, driven mainly by rising regional disposable incomes, a large product, and technology hungry expatriate population, and a burgeoning tourism industry, according to Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade.

HE Sheikha Lubna was speaking at the International CES/hometech conference after inaugurating five major trade shows organized by Epoc Messe Frankfurt at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) Sunday.

As part of her keynote address, HE Sheikha Lubna said: 'The Gulfs consumer electronics industry is predicted to achieve a 30% growth in 2008 to AED 18.35bn, representing a significant 17% share of the expected AED105.7bn global market.' Sheikha Lubna noted that the Middle Easts consumer electronics sector is expected to experience even more growth as consumers in general continue to rapidly adopt mobile and modern technologies for personal use and seek better designs and added product features.

''My own country, the UAE, currently leads the regions broader consumer electronics and household appliance sector, which is expected to achieve double-digit annual growth towards 2010 mainly due to rising demand for new convergence products and networked household appliances,' she stated.

International CES/hometech features dedicated Home Networking and Automation Zones, in anticipation of the growth of households using data networking solutions throughout the world to almost 145 million by 2011.

Sheikha Lubna underlined automated home technology as one of the fastest-growing sectors of the consumer electronics industry that is strongly patronized particularly in Dubai, where many high-profile land developments are being fitted with ready-to-use built-in wireless communications systems.

A total of 950 exhibitors from 43 countries around the world are showcasing the latest in a range of products and services from to earth moving equipment to home audio systems, showcasing their wares in what promises to be the largest collection of trade exhibitions held anywhere in the Middle East.

Speaking on behalf of Epoc Messe Frankfurt GmbH, CEO Eckhard Pruy said: 'Spurred by rapid economic growth in the Middle East, several international and regional companies are exploring new business opportunities in the region and our series of focused annual exhibitions provide an ideal platform for international companies.' Four of the five shows cater to the needs of the construction industry that is booming across the region including Hardware and Tools Middle East exhibition that is now in its ninth year. Exhibitors at the show display the latest and a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and plumbing products from all over the world perfectly positioned to capture this market,' he added.

In concord with the burgeoning levels of building work is an increased demand for fixtures and fittings that are on display at the Light Middle East, the construction boom in the region has ensured that the lighting fixtures market will grow at a CAGR of almost 7% that is higher than the global average of 4%.

ISH Kitchen and Bath Middle East is the design-led kitchen and bathroom exhibition in the region, attracting major manufacturers and suppliers from around the world who are presenting new products and solutions.

The market for outdoor lifestyle goods is also growing and the boom in property, leisure and municipal developments, both require considerable amounts of interior and exterior landscaping.

Dubai authorities forecast that spend on landscaping projects this year would be worth AED165m ($45m). Construction of parks and new golf courses in the region for the next five years will fuel spending on gardens and landscaping, estimated at AED 60.5bn ($16.5bn).

This growth augurs well for the Garden and Landscaping Middle East that is the dedicated international trade event in the region for the landscaping and outdoor living industries. The show offers the perfect regional industry networking event to present the latest trends, products and services available to the sophisticated market of landscaping and outdoor architecture.

Rugged spare parts for the Middle East at Automechanika Dubai

Automechanika Middle East, the largest aftermarket exhibition in the Middle East region, is about to open its doors to show the newest parts, accessories and garage equipment. For the first time, visitors will be able to view rugged spare parts from German manufacturer Meyle Products. The enhanced parts meet exactly the demands of the regional market concerning price and long-life quality, even under climate caused circumstances.

Quality, long service life and ease of installation are crucial properties for spare parts. Meyle Products, a brand of the German manufacturer Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG, offers ideal solutions in that regard that also meet the special requirements of the spare parts market in the Middle East. Appearing for the first time at Automechanika Middle East in Dubai, the manufacturer will be exhibiting quality spare parts for cars that share two special properties: they have exceptionally long service lives and are quick and easy to install. With products such as steering and suspension parts, rubber-metal parts, water pumps, brake components, belts, shock absorbers and a variety of other parts, Meyle offers a wide range of products and attractive value for money.

Cars are subject to unusual burdens in the Middle East: sand, gravel and extreme temperatures cause rubber components to become porous rapidly. Vehicles can also suffer from irregular maintenance, causing parts to fail prematurely. Meyle Products, a German manufacturer and vendor of spare parts for cars, offers optimal solutions to those challenges. At this year’s Automechanika Middle East, Meyle will be inviting potential customers in the Gulf region to judge the special quality of its HD parts for the first time. HD parts are direct replacements for parts from the vehicle manufacturer or OE vendor, yet are superior to those parts in terms of reliability and service life, making them an economical alternative.

To enhance the quality of its spare parts, a team of Meyle engineers analyzes the loads that contribute to the failure of the original part. Depending on their findings, the design is modified, the internal structure reinforced, better-quality material used, or rubber-metal components are redesigned.

Longer service life and ruggedness under extreme loads and climate conditions are further considerations when improving the parts. While the appearance of the products may vary in some cases, ease of installation is guaranteed.

Visitors will be able to view the improvements first-hand at the Meyle stand in the German Pavilion, where cross sections of the parts will be on display. “We have encountered a great deal of interest in our products here and therefore intend to increase our presence in the Middle East,” explains Christian Schwarz, Area Sales Manager at Meyle Products. “We also expect considerable interest from neighboring states at Automechanika in Dubai, as Meyle parts meet the demands of the region’s motorists by offering solid quality at a reasonable price.”

Meyle Products will be on show from the 1st to the 3rd of June 2008 in the German Pavilion in Hall 6, Stand AM 3220 in the Dubai International Exhibition Center of the Dubai World Trade Center.

Beautyworld and Wellness & Spas Middle East will begin tomorrow

The twin exhibitions Beautyworld Middle East, and Wellness & Spas Middle East will begin tomorrow (Sunday) at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre and will run till May 20.

The events will witness leading manufacturers, suppliers of beauty equipment, cosmetics, fragrance and beauty products, wellness and spa products, and fitness services and equipment, showcase their products before a crowd of 15,000 visitors from 100 countries, said its organisers Epoc Messe Frankfurt.

“The Middle East cosmetics and personal care sector has grown 12 per cent annually over the past three years, with sales valued at Dh7.7 billion ($2.1 billion) in 2007,” said Eckhard Pruy, CEO of Epoc Messe Frankfurt.

“The figures reveal that the society of the Middle East puts a premium on appearance, skin care, and beauty and grooming; areas that are increasingly an important concern for both women and men," he noted.

“In fact, the consumption of cosmetics and perfumes in the region is ranked among the highest per capita worldwide, with an average purchase per head of around Dh1,225 annually, and the beauty market worth more than Dh1.49 billion ($408 million) in retail sale,” said Andrea Werner, senior show manager of Beautyworld Middle East.

“An added feature to this year’s exhibition aside from the very popular Walk of Beauty and the nail competition will be the make up competition, and seminars and workshops – ‘The interactive Beauty and Wellness experience’,” she added.

The acknowledgment reflects Dubai's status as one of the first choice destinations for travelers who are seeking for a healthy break, or a relaxing period of rest and rejuvenation.

Dubai's spa facilities have been found to be amongst the best in the world,’ says Elaine O’Connell, senior show manager of Wellness & Spas Middle East.

"Out of the four spa destinations across the whole of the Middle East listed as being of a world class standard, three were found in Dubai. We are anticipating that the city's spas will become a yearly fixture on the list, as the emirate already has one of the highest concentrations of spas per capita across the globe," she added.

According to O’Connell, the global market for fitness equipment is expected to surpass Dh44 billion by 2010, stimulated by demand from homes, hotels, schools, universities, organizations’ and corporations’ fitness clubs, health centers, golf courses and cruise ships amongst others.

“The fitness equipment industry is going through a period of explosive growth, and Wellness & Spas Middle East attracts buyers, investors, purchasers, developers, owners and industry professionals from hotels/resorts, wellness centers, clinics, health & fitness clubs, leisure centre’s, and hypermarkets amongst others.”

According to recent research, for every Dh5 spent on wellness programs, employers can expect a return of up to Dh50 through lower medical insurance claims, reduced days off due to sickness, and improved productivity amongst other factors.

The Market Focus initiative is targeted at boosting trade with one particular region, with the ultimate aim of helping to build long term business partnerships and trade between the international publishing community and the Market Focus region, which this year is the Arab World (defined as the 20 countries and the 2 states that make up the Arab League and have Arabic as their registered official language).

This is the largest Market Focus programme ever run by The London Book Fair and has been three years in the making. It was devised with the British Council and the programme is the result of collaborative efforts of the past few years.

The selection of the Arab World as Market Focus is timely, with statistics showing strong trade growth in this area. Emma House, Exhibition Manager International Development, The London Book Fair says: “I’m delighted that we have put together such an impressive range of events and other initiatives to mark the Arab World as Market Focus 2008. I have found the experience of forming business partnerships with people from the Arab World and discovering more about its literature extremely rewarding, and I’m sure this experience will be shared by everyone attending The London Book Fair. I have always had a warm welcome wherever I have travelled in the Arab World, and I am pleased to be able to offer the same hospitality to our Arab visitors. There is clearly great interest from Arab publishers in attending The London Book Fair and grasping potential commercial opportunities. I hope this will lay the foundation for many fruitful business partnerships for the future.”

British Council Director of Literature, Susanna Nicklin, says: ”Improving cultural understanding is the driver behind the Arab World seminar programme, while the backdrop of the fair provides the crucial business networking opportunities to complement that. The ultimate aim is to create relationships between organizations, people and countries. The result could be more Arabic books translated for the UK market and more Western works reaching Arab readers, giving people the opportunity to read what others have written and engendering more acceptance and understanding between our communities.“
The London Book Fair has already been involved in initiatives to open up the Arab World to the benefits of international trade with publishers. The team have been working closely with the British Council, which has been instrumental in building relationships with the region. This has included joint trips to book fairs in Damascus, Sharjah and Cairo to help facilitate contacts between British and Arab publishers, and to introduce them to the mutual benefits of trade.

Dubai International Horse Fair 2008 will be held from 20 - 22 March 2008

Some of the world's most prestigious equestrian equipment and service companies are set to arrive in Dubai this month for the Dubai International Horse Fair (DIHF), as international interest in the potential of the Arabian equestrian market increases.

The Arab world has a long history of breeding and raising champion horses and its status as an international market is exponentially increasing with the rise of developments like the UAE's iconic new Meydan Racecourse and the global prominence of the Dubai World Cup meeting.

As a result, some of the world's best-established European and American specialist suppliers are looking to raise their profile in the Middle East market through their participation in the Dubai International Horse Fair.

Abdulla Qassem, Board Member - Higher Organising Committee of Dubai International Horse Fair and Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship, said: "Many of the European companies exhibiting at this year's DIHF have developed a leadership position in their home markets and are looking to generate a similarly commanding presence in the Middle East and surrounding markets."

"This provides the potential for some very interesting competition between world-class companies, as well as ensuring that visitors are provided with the widest possible selection of premium equipment," he added.

One of the most innovative exhibition stands is set to come from France, with genetics experts CRYOZOOTECH providing material on the use of cloning for breeding championship race horses. The company is the first in the world to successfully complete the cloning of champions.

Among other high-end international exhibitors will be Horse Weigh of the United Kingdom, which will be launching a new mobile weighing concept at this year's DIHF, while ECB Equine Ltd will be demonstrating a full range of world equine hydrotherapy spas.

They will be joined by Kraft Horse Walkers of Germany. Kraft is particularly known for its unique oval horse walker and will have a working demonstration of their "Oval walker model" on their stand.

A new exhibitor for 2008 is Loddon Ltd. (UK), which has over 40 years' of experience in the equine industry, and which works with many of the leading names in this field - such as the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai, the Singapore Turf Club, the Japanese Racing Association and for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

"We see Dubai International Horse Fair as a critically-important first step into the GCC countries, providing an important platform to promote our new stables in Qatar. We are looking to expand our business in the Middle East and see the exhibition as a key entry-point," said Derek Davies, Export Sales Manager, Loddon Ltd.

Another first-time participant is Racewood Ltd of the UK. The company will be displaying its interactive simulator, which imitates real-life racing conditions at most major racecourses throughout the world. The simulator is the world's first to address the psychology of racing, providing computer-generated insights into the jockey's technique and suggestions relating to use of the whip and balance.

Completing the display of equestrian products is a professional Veterinarian Seminar and Exhibitor Presentations. The sessions will be hosted by local and international speakers for professional and interested veterinarians, horse owners, breeders and trainers.

Guest speakers are represented from renowned UAE hospitals and laboratories, covering many different aspects from hoof care, injury recovery, therapy massage, nutrition, respiratory, reproduction and dermatology issues.

"The business of horses - whether they are for racing or recreational riding - is increasingly benefiting from the use of advanced technology in partnership with traditional methods. We believe the balance of exhibitors at this year's DIHF is among the most innovative and interesting we've ever assembled," concluded Qassem.

DIHF is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, from 20 - 22 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The fair runs from 11:00am - 8:00pm on the 20th and 22nd March and from 2:00pm - 8:00pm on Friday, 21st March.
