Creek extension to cut through Dubai Safa Park
One of the oldest and the most popular parks in Dubai, Safa Park, would lose its original size and beauty with a new canal, an extension of the Dubai Creek, cutting through a part of it.
Senior officials of the Dubai Municipality have stated that a section of the Safa Park would pave the way for the canal leading to the under-construction Business Bay Project.
The whole project involves the extension of the Dubai Creek.
Though the officials said that the canal project would not spoil the beauty of the park, the move has irked people who fear that once altered, the park would never get back its original landscape again.
Issa Al Maidour, Director of the General Projects Department in the Dubai Municipality, said, “The park would be chipped away along its edges. The project is being handled by the Dubai Properties, who are taking care of the Business Bay Project. Right now we don’t have much information on the actual plan.”
The Safa Park is spread over an area of 64 hectares and was constructed in 1975. It was redeveloped in 1984 and then again between 1989 and 1992.
The park has three lakes and 16,924 trees and bushes.
There are lawns, a hill and waterfall offering a beautiful view.
Ahmad Abdul Kareem, Director of the Horticulture and Public Parks Department, said that they were planning some new features in the park to ensure that it remained attractive.
“The park would have new landscaping, trees and fountains soon. The project would not affect the park in any way and people would be able to get the same ambience. We would ensure that the park remains attractive as it is now. Steps are being taken in this connection,” he said.
When contacted, representatives of Dubai Properties said the project was not being handled by them. “We are only handling the project till Shaikh Zayed Road. This particular project involves the extension of the Dubai Creek and is being handled by the Roads and Transport Authority,” said an official.
Khaleej Times contacted the Public Relations Department of the RTA several times regarding the matter and detailed questions about the project were sent. The officials, however, did not respond to any of the queries.
Sources in the RTA said the project had not yet started.
The visitors are an unhappy lot.
”They must not touch a park that is one of the oldest and the most popular. The officials should think about some other alternatives. Tinkering with it would hamper the beauty of the park. Any new construction would not bring back the same ambience again. The authorities must think over the plan again,” said Richard Connor, a US national living in the area. Source
