New registration conditions and timings at public schools for UAE national and expatriate children

The Ministry of Education has announced that the registration of new UAE national students at kindergartens and public schools for the academic year 2008-2009 will begin from Sunday, March 02 to June, 26.

It stated in the decision endorsed by Dr Fauzia Bedri, deputy executive director for educational affairs, that "the registration period for grades 1- 12 for the UAE nationals, will begin from Sunday to June 26, while the registration for expatriate students will start from May 4 to June 26".

As per this decision, the UAE national children born from 01/10/1998- 01/04/2003, are entitled for registration in grade 1, while those who complete five years by 01/10, will be allowed to register provided that they have attended one academic year at grade 2 in the accredited kindergarten.

The ministry set admission age for grade 2 to 12 as follows: 6.6 years to 9 years for grade 2, while 16. 6 years to 20 year for grade 12.

It added that the age of applicant student could be counted from Oct. 01, where month differences could be addressed at minimum age limit, and year difference could be tackled at the maximum limit. Those transferred from public schools abroad to the UAE, will be exempted from age limit not exceeding one year in all grades except grade 1. Those who do not exceed 6.6 year on Oct. 01 can be allowed to enroll in grade 2 at public schools provided that they have completed grade 1 in the accredited school in the UAE abroad. The age limit could be ignored for one year for students being transferred from private schools for grade 3- 12.

Distinguished children of expatriate employees at public and private sectors, will be admitted to public schools from grade 1- 12, provided that they do not constitute 20 per cent of total number of UAE national students in one school, and same percentage in one section. Besides that an expatriate applicant student to grade 1 should pass an interview to be conducted by a technical committee. (WAM)
