Dubai's RTA plans 90 pedestrian bridges by 2010

The Roads and Transport Authority plans to build more than 90 pedestrian bridges along the entire road network of the emirate in a bid to reduce the number of run-over accidents, reported a local daily.

"We are constructing these bridges to ensure total safety of the pedestrians. We would be building more than 90 bridges on all Dubai roads by 2010. The construction work on some of them has already started. Shaikh Zayed Road alone would have more than 10 bridges at different points," said Director of the Traffic Department at RTA Badr Al Sirri.

The construction of one such bridge on the Sheikh Zayed Road will result in the closure of the fast lane from the Trade Centre Roundabout till the First Interchange (Defence Roundabout) for three consecutive days, starting today, senior RTA officials were quoted by the Khaleej Times as saying.

Al Sirri said that pedestrians crossing a road on which vehicles move at a speed of more than 80 km per hour is illegal.

"It is always very risky. There have been many terrible accidents. Still, there are so many people who do not have patience and just run from one end of the road to the other.
Smaller roads located in residential areas are less risky. If there are no bridges to cross, pedestrians can opt for the public transport facility to get them to the other end," he pointed out. (WAM)
