Child safety awareness campaign on March 2
A seat-belt and child safety campaign titled ‘Safety in the Seat Belt’ will commence on March 2.
The event aimed at raising awareness on the importance of use of seat-belts in cars is being organised by Dubai Police in cooperation with Santis HSE Group and Gargash Enterprises.
Announcing the campaign yesterday, Brigadier Saif Al Zafin, Director of General Department of Traffic, said the two-week campaign will run as part of a larger initiative by Dubai Police to promote safety and awareness throughout the city.
In the first week of the campaign, a number of lectures and exhibitions will be organised in schools and shopping malls in Dubai and the second week will focus on issuing traffic fines to seat belt violators, said Brig Al Zafin, adding that the campaign aims at protecting community members, in general.
He said that during the year 2007, 16 per cent of those who died in traffic accidents were found driving their cars without taking safety measures. Seat belt violations recorded by the Traffic Police in 2007 reached 7,094.
According to local statistics available, there were 3,340 traffic accidents in 2007, of which 332 resulted in fatalities and 1,538 involved serious injuries or permanent disability.
He said that compliance of the seat-belt rule had declined in Dubai during the last few years and currently only 40-60 per cent of motorists respect the seat-belt rule.
He urged the public to use seat belts and cautioned that children should not be seated in the front seat. Source
