Black Point System for monitoring traffic rules and regulations

The Black Point System for monitoring traffic rules and regulations has been finalised and will be enforced after endorsement of its executive bylaws, according to a senior official.

A three- to six-month-long awareness campaign will precede the implementation of the system, said Lt-Gen. Saif Abdullah Al Shafar, Under-secretary in the Ministry of Interior.

Lt-Gen. Al Shafar said clear strategies have been chalked out in cooperation with the institutions concerned to reduce the traffic accidents and mortality rate.

He said 1,053 deaths due to road accidents were reported last year across the country. “The figure is alarming when compared to 868 deaths due to accidents in 2006,” he noted.

The rise in the toll in road accidents last year should not be taken lightly, said Lt-Gen. Al Shafar, stressing that the main goal of enforcing the amended federal traffic law is to make the streets and roads more secure and safe for motorists and pedestrians as well.

He clarified that the strategy of the ministry will focus on upgrading the performance of traffic monitoring authorities and conducting a study based on the principles of ‘roads engineering’ where most accidents take place.

The Department of Public Relations and Moral Guidance at the ministry will, in cooperation with the Traffic Department next week, launch a campaign to acquaint the public with the federal traffic law and its amended articles, and the penalties stipulated therein. Source
