EMAL awards power plant contract to GE
Emirates Aluminium Company Limited (EMAL) announced today that it has awarded the Power Island Contract to General Electrical (GE) International Operations Company Inc.
The contract has an estimated value of Dhs1.8bn and includes the following equipment: six 9FA GE combustion turbine generators; four bypass stacks for simple cycle operations; four heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) with exhaust stacks; two steam turbine generators; and two sea water cooling surface condensers.
'We are delighted to collaborate with GE on this project. They are providing us with a state-of-the-art facility; it represents not only new capacity and size, but efficient use of clean energy, and best-practice environmental performance,' said Yousuf Abdullah Bastaki, Project Director for EMAL.
The project is scheduled to start receiving GE equipment in December 2008, and ending with the last equipment deliveries in July of 2009. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be complete in the year 2010. When both phases of the EMAL Smelter Plant are completed the plant will be the largest aluminium production in the world.
The EMAL Smelter Project consists of a 700,000 ton per year aluminium plant with a supporting 2,000 MW power plant. The EMAL site is located close to the Arabian Gulf by Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Power Plant will be a natural gas fired combined cycle plant with supplemental duct firing and dual fuel (No. 2 fuel oil) operations. (WAM)
