Nurses on visit visas will be allowed to work
Nurses on visit visas can now work in the UAE, as per a new policy framed by the Ministry of Health (MoH), a senior official said.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Abul Ghaffar Abdul Ghaffor, assistant under-secretary for Curative Medicine Department at the MoH, said, “We’ll allow nurses on visit visas to sit in the nursing examination of the MoH, to take up jobs in the private sector.”
The official also underlined that the scarcity of nursing cadres was a major problem for both the private and public sectors. “However, the problem is more acute in the private sector,” noted the official.
About other steps undertaken by the MoH to encourage more expats to join the nursing profession, Dr Ghaffor said the ministry was likely to reduce the number of years mandatory for expatriate nurses to serve at public institutes after their graduation. “We are planning to reduce it (mandatory period to serve at public institutes) to two years,” he disclosed.
Currently, expat nurses receive free education at nursing institutes affiliated to the MoH, but they have to serve at least three years at one of the MoH-affiliated medical institutions after graduation. Source
