MoL to inspect firms to ensure protection of workers' rights
The Ministry of Labour (MoL) will soon begin inspections of companies and work sites in order to ensure protection of the workers' labour rights, according to Qaseem Jameel, Deputy Director of the Inspection Department in the MoL.
Sources in the MoL's Abu Dhabi office pointed out that around 100 inspectors, in teams of two, will carry out inspections on big companies in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
They will visit the areas defined by the Electronic Maps System.
Colonel Nasir Al Awadi Al Minhali, Director of the Abu Dhabi Naturalisation and Residency Department (ADNRD), said the ministries of Interior and Labour will coordinate the inspection campaign.
Jameel said inspectors will also scrutinise mechanisms followed by companies regarding payment of wages and overtime benefits to check proper compliance of labour laws by companies.
He stressed that if any company is found violating the labour law provisions regarding accommodation standards or payment of wages, it will face stiff penalties, including a Dh10,000 fine, blocking of work permits and downgrading of status.
Humaid bin Deemas, Assistant Under-secretary in the MoL, said the ministry has asked the companies to prepare a study on the status of labourers with the aim of ensuring their rights and fixing a minimum wage.
Khaled Mohammad Al Minhali, head of the Occupational Health and Safety at the Inspection Department in the MoL, clarified that the ministerial order No 27/1 of the year 1981 defined that every employer shall provide his employees with transportation, suitable housing, drinking water, food, first aid facilities as well as recreation and sports activities.
