RTA starts installation of air-conditioned bus stations in Dubai

The Public Transport Agency of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently started installing 815 air-conditioned bus stations with a total cost of Dh 210 million in various areas across Dubai. They are the first of their kinds in the world.
Mohamed Obeid Al Mulla, CEO of Public Transport Agency of RTA confirmed that the total cost of these stations involves Dh 175 million, the value of the contract between the RTA and the supplier for the use of facilities and services of these stations and almost Dh 36 million, the value of manufacturing the stations, inaddition to Dh 40 million for maintenance costs over ten years. All stations will be handed over to Dubai by end of this year.
The stations will be installed in a number of areas throughout Dubai on three phases. The first phase will include the installation of two stations in each bus stop in 315 locations and one station in each bus stop in 185 locations, provided that the job will be done in April 2008. In addition to installing one station in each bus stop in 156 locations, provided that the job will be done in October 2008. As for the third phase, it will be signed with the supplier for the installation of 75 stations inside the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (JAFZA).
The Public Transport Agency will launch a large-scale campaign to promote this innovative service in collaboration with various parties including Marketing and Corporate Communication Department of RTA this month. This campaign is hoped to play an active role in encouraging the public to use the public buses that will undoubtedly facilitate the traffic and improve its flow level, in addition to reducing the rate of accidents on the streets and roads. The campaign includes a number of activities including television ads and radio spots, press releases and commercials.
"This step comes within the (Bus Master Plan), and is considered the first of its kind in the world. This project is part of the strategic initiatives of the RTA to provide better services and amenities for commuters, especially in the high temperatures of summer where these stations had been equipped with the best techniques air conditioning that would encourage the public from different social cross-sections and reduce jams caused by the large numbers of private cars, as well as reduce the rate of environmental pollution, which positively affect the public health of the community and contribute to raising its productivity and giving," Al Mulla said.
He added that the design of the stations will be inspired by the form of Crescent and will be painted in a modern metallic color, in addition to provide them with advanced air conditioning system, which is the first of its kind in the world, and furnish them with special designs for advertising and information space; it is a technology used for the first time in the UAE and the region, as well as an integrated package of public facilities that include ATMs, vending machines, garbage recycling containers and other facilities.
He explained that the main goal of releasing this service is to encourage the public to use public buses through the provision of global innovative and pioneering solutions, which will create an atmosphere of comfort rather than waiting for a bus under the scorching sun in summer. This project represents a significant support and essential foundation for the integration of expanding and modernizing the public transport sector, including the buses, taxis, marine and Dubai Metro once is up and running.
Al Mulla concluded that the Public Transport Agency is always keen to expand, develop and enhance the mechanism of its work through a package of innovative solutions aiming to provide a superior service to the public of UAE citizens, residents, visitors and tourists to encourage them to use the public transport network, which will undoubtedly develop the traffic flow and diminish rate of accidents on vital roads and streets.Source
