Dubai's road accidents dropped by 4% since beginning of 2007

Mortality rate resulting from traffic accidents recorded a 3.5% drop in the first eight months of the current year compared to the same period in 2006, according to official statistics.
Engineer Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic & Roads Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), revealed that the number of traffic mortalities reported in the emirate of Dubai since January up to the end of August of this year reached 193 cases, showing a reduction compared to the same period of last year, where registered traffic mortalities were 200 cases.

Reduction of traffic fatality ratio is a good indicator of the success of RTA actions & sustained efforts to ensure safety of all road users. The drop percentage, though modest in figure, is viewed as a substantial progress; particularly if we take into consideration the persistent increase in the number of vehicles, traffic volumes and ever-increasing inhabitants of the emirate of Dubai, Maitha said.
''However, from our own perspective, we consider the percentage is still high, and we are therefore making all efforts & adopting all means to reduce it to the lowest level possible. This requires a course of actions at the top of which is curbing excessive speed by rash drivers, causing harm to other motorists & road users, including pedestrians Maitha noted.
She went on to say that most accidents, particularly large-scale accidents which result in mortalities and serious injuries, take place at free and highways, as 47% of accidents registered during the period happened at those roads.
Traffic & Roads Agency is currently adopting several programs & plans aiming at minimizing the proportion of accidents, which is currently around 22 mortality cases per each 100 thousand of inhabitants, to around 17 mortality cases per each 100 thousand of inhabitants during the next two years. This is envisaged to be achieved in cooperation with the concerned bodies in this regard commented engineer Maitha.
She pointed out that RTA completed construction of 24 pedestrian crossings to control traffic accidents, and Traffic & Roads Agency has plans to address the dangerous traffic spots, particularly at free and highways.
We have attended to a number of those spots and improved their performance, as far as traffic safety is concerned. The Agency is introducing new concepts of high technological significance in designing of new roads, based on the highest safety standards she remarked. Source
