Abu Dhabi Government approves AED300 million grant to Emirates Foundation
The Government of Abu Dhabi has earmarked AED300 million to support the philanthropic activities of the Emirates Foundation. The Government's grant is equal to the total amount received by the Foundation from corporate donors.
In another gesture of support, the Government of Abu Dhabi, at the directives of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has decided to pay for the Foundation's expenses to enable it to use the donations it receives in financing its programmes.
Sheikh Mohammed attended on Monday a recognition event staged by the Foundation to thank the many donors who have contributed over AED 300 million to the Foundation's its activities over its first two years.
Sheikh Mohammed thanked them for contributing to the Foundations Endowment Fund, as well as for specific projects, before handing a plaque to each donor.
In his speech, Sheikh Mohammed discussed the Foundations progress since its launch in April 2005.
I want to say a few words from the heart, Sheikh Mohammed told the representatives of scores of leading local and international organizations, as well as individual donors. The participation of the UAEs business and industrial sectors in the work of the Emirates Foundation is crucial to its success. He continued:This financial support is essential and we recognize your financial generosity in funding the work of the Foundation. We also applaud the generosity of spirit in which your donations have been - and are being - made, a spirit which underpins the continuing warm relationship between you and the Foundations management team. Sheikh Mohammed then emphasized: The practical elements of the Foundations causes are clear - so too should be the Foundations moral and intellectual contribution to the personal development, self-motivation and enlightenment that we are encouraging in our young nationals. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Emirates Foundation, stated that the Emirates Foundation was an ambitious initiative intended to achieve cooperation between Private and government institutions - especially in the Foundations six core areas - and to raise social awareness to community challenges.
Our ultimate goal is to enhance the life of the people of the UAE, he added. That is why we are adopting such a wide range of community-related activities. The Managing Director of the Emirates Foundation, Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, reviewed the success of many recent projects within the Foundations core areas of operation: Education, Science & Technology, Arts & Culture, Social Development, Environment and Public Awareness.
He began by explaining: The Foundation is a unique institution which has been created to discover, and act on, serious social issues that fall outside the government remit - issues where real progress can be achieved with targeted funding and committed, long-term support. Among many issues now being tackled, Al Sayegh discussed graduate scholarship programmes, help with special needs institutions, the launch of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, a vital diabetes public awareness programme - and in particular the major TAWTEEN and TAKATOF social development projects.
The TAWTEEN Learning & Leadership Project addresses the increasing need to provide local nationals with the right skills, motivation and career opportunities to realize their ambitions, Al Sayegh said, as well as how to become more active and involved citizens. He continued:The TAKATOF Volunteer Programme is another original initiative to develop socially responsible volunteer efforts to meet community needs.
Hundreds of our young people recently helped refurbish and repaint an old school in Fujairah. A few weeks later there was a real emergency, Typhoon Gonu. I am proud that our volunteers contributed extensively to helping families and community in the emergency and clean-up operations. Al Sayegh then discussed how the Foundation would undertake its next stage of expansion and development, reading out new mission statements that will cover the growth of each of the Foundations core areas.
He also referred to the recent appointment of the Foundations new CEO, Peter Cleaves, a highly experienced philanthropic specialist. We shall use his expertise in establishing the standards and disciplines that mark all great philanthropic institutions worldwide. Finally Al Sayegh thanked all the donors, as well as the beneficiaries who had made best use of the funding offered - plus the national media for their informed coverage and support. Source
