1,200 buses on Dubai roads by 2008: RTA
A total of 1,200 buses will be plying on the Dubai roads by 2008, a senior RTA official has stated.
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, told Khaleej Times recently that the project includes launching of new articulated buses (both single and two trailers). The RTA has already bought 80 articulated buses — 51 two-trailers and 29 single-trailers — at a cost of Dh148 million. “We are trying to introduce more buses to improve the public transport system in the emirate.”
The RTA has signed a contract to purchase 620 buses that would cost more than Dh1 billion. “These buses would be delivered in 2007 and 2008,” said Al Tayer.
“With this, the number of buses will rise to 1,200 bus by 2008 and it will exceed 2,000 buses in future. All buses will be equipped with the latest modern technologies and highest standards of security and safety,” added Al Tayer.
He said the RTA is developing a system under which 90 per cent of Dubai would be covered by buses. “People will not have to wait for buses. There would be a bus stop only a few metres from the residences,” he stated.
In addition to this, the RTA has drawn up a strategic plan to upgrade the marine transport in the emirate at a cost of over Dh1 billion, he said.
“The plan envisages operating Creek lines in successive phases, a coast line along Jumeirah beach to serve tourists in the emirate and another line to serve Nakheel Island projects,” said Al Tayer.
“Currently, the RTA is in coordination with Nakheel to identify the requirements of the project and reserve locations for building stations in those islands,” he said. Source
