China Outsource Exhibition begins today
For the first time, Dubai will witness the largest exhibition of Chinese suppliers at the China Outsource Exhibition that kicks off today.
Bill Janeri, general manager, Middle East, Global Sources, which is organising the fair, said the expo is designed to help importers, distributors, traders and retailers in the Mena region to buy direct from Chinese suppliers.
"The gifts and home products segment is certainly one of the fastest growing segments, as people are spending more on consumer goods. So buyers will find new manufacturing sources for products like decorative items for home, bed covers and linens, and other novelty gifts," he said.
Suppliers at Global Sources supply to some of the leading brands in the world, from Carrefour and Home Depot, and from Dell Computers, Kmart and Sears in the US.
"The importers, distributors and traders coming to our shows are not looking to purchase "brands" - they are looking to purchase products on which they can stamp their own brand," said Janeri.
China is Dubai's top supplier of imported goods and as Dr Hugo Toledo, associate professor and chair, department of economics, The American University of Sharjah, observes, this trend is likely to continue.
Over 40 per cent of Dubai's furniture, toys and sports products come from China, as per the department of Ports and Customs. Said Dr Toledo, "According to the IMF, in 2005, about 10 per cent of the UAE's total imports came from China." He observed that it could pose only a small threat to industries in the UAE. He said: "Imports from China will impact UAE domestic industries, but only those inefficient industries incapable to compete in the global market. In the long run, only industries capable to compete in the global market will survive. Source
