Bawadi to house world's largest shopping area

Bawadi, the world's largest hospitality and leisure development launched in May last year, will be home to the world's largest shopping area — a total of 40 million square feet of gross leaseable area (GLA) — it was announced yesterday.
The launch of the world's largest shopping area will provide support to the tourism and hospitality industry, which, in return will play a major role in the diversification and development of Dubai's economy.
The shopping area will consist of shopping malls, boutique malls, street shopping and an underground shopping area connecting all Bawadi's elements to become the world's longest shopping boulevard.
At 40 million square feet the proposed Bawadi boulevard will be more than four times larger than Dubai Mall, currently billed as the world's largest shopping mall, located at Burj Dubai and set to be the world's tallest building. The Bawadi shopping area will also be five times larger than the combined total of the 30 new malls. MAF Shopping Malls is proposing to build in the Middle East and North Africa.
Prior to the Bawadi retail announcement, estimates predicted a 209 per cent growth in retail space to 4.25 million square metres by the end of the decade. And based on these estimates, Dubai will need to more than double its annual per capita retail spend to $8,400 by 2010, from the current $3,500, to make retail space viable, according to Colliers International,
Bawadi will be home to the world's biggest area, including a 10km long hotel and shopping, entertainment, convention centres and residential apartments. There will be 31 hotels ranging from three to five-star, offering more than 29,000 rooms. The centrepiece of the development will be Asia Asia, providing 6,500 rooms, shopping mall, entertainment and convention facilities. Source
