Dubai to reduce private car ownership to alleviate traffic jam
Dubai will introduce policies to reduce the high percentage of private car ownership in a bid to alleviate traffic jam, Khaleej Times reported.
"Traffic congestion is caused by several factors including high car ownership rate which is 451 vehicles per 1,000 people in Dubai, " which is too high compared with 57 in Hong Kong and 103 in Singapore, Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, was quoted as saying.
"The situation can be improved by providing a balanced mass transit system that provides reasonable alternatives so that people can do without the semi or full reliance on private vehicles," he added, giving no details about the private car ownership reduction plan.
Traffic bottlenecks have several negative effects on social, economic and environmental aspects, said the official.
Statistics showed that the overall traffic violations registered in Dubai, with a registered population of 1.422 million in 2006, increased 196 percent to 1.445 million in 2006 from 488, 000 in 2000.
