Firms ignoring workers’ safety to be penalised
The Dubai Municipality will blacklist and penalise the companies that do not abide by the safety regulations at construction sites. The warning comes in the wake of a number of accidents at construction sites this year.
Fauzi Al Shuhhi, Head of Buildings Inspection Section, said that violations will not be tolerated in any case. “The responsibility lies with the contractors to ensure the safety of the workers at the construction sites. Any one found violating the regulations will be penalised and blacklisted. The workers need to have all the safety means at the sites and the companies’ needs to provide it to the workers,” said Shuhhi.
“The fines may vary between Dh5,000 and Dh50,000 depending on the magnitude of the violation,” he said.
He added that the civic body will not take into account the company’s reputation while slapping fines or even blacklisting. “We are going to fine companies irrespective of their status and name in the market,” he said.
In January, an Indian worker was killed when the scaffolding on which he was standing collapsed at a construction site in Al Ghusais. Two Bangladeshi nationals were seriously injured in the accident.
Later in June, two workers were killed when the scaffolding of a building under construction in Al Quoz collapsed. Twenty-three workers also were injured in the accident.
In October, two Indian workers were killed when they were trying to demolish an old wall of a building in Baniyas Road in Deira.
In the same month, one worker died and two others were injured after a trench caved in near the Al Ghusais Police Station.
The biggest accident took place in November when seven workers died and 19 others were injured after a bridge under construction collapsed in Dubai Marina.
