Rochester Institute of Technology to Open Dubai Campus in 2008

The Rochester Institute of Technology said today that it planned to open a campus in Dubai next fall, making it the second major American university to announce a partnership with the Persian Gulf state in recent weeks.
William W. Destler, Rochester’s president, called Dubai “the perfect place to establish a beachhead in that part of the world.”

Michigan State University said in October that it would begin operating next year in the emirate’s new International Academic City. Dubai is competing with — and is often overshadowed by — neighboring Qatar as it seeks to become a regional hub for higher education.
RIT Dubai, as the new campus is known, will be part of Dubai Silicon Oasis, a 7.2-square-kilometer complex that will include a high-tech park, housing, and retail businesses. The center will focus on microelectronics and semiconductor research, development, and production, areas of particular strength for RIT, Mr. Destler noted.
The campus initially will offer part-time graduate courses in fields like electrical engineering, computer engineering, and financial and service management. By 2009 graduate offerings will be full time and will include applied networking, telecommunications, and facility management. By 2010 the campus expects to welcome undergraduates.
Mr. Destler said the partnership would allow RIT students the opportunity to study and gain experiences in the Gulf region. It also will foster faculty exchanges and help the university build relationships with multinational corporations located there. —Karin Fischer Source
