New Dubai Zoo project not scrapped, clarifies official
The Dubai Municipality has categorically declared that the new Dubai Zoo project at DubaiLand has not been scrapped.
Rashad Bukhash, Director of the General Projects Department at the Dubai Municipality, said the project, which boasts of the construction of the biggest zoo in the region with all facilities and different features, is very much in the pipeline.
Earlier, there have been reports that the project is being scrapped. The present zoo is situated in Jumeirah and houses around 1,200 animals, raising concerns that it is overcrowded. It has also been under the scanner of prominent animal welfare groups like PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals).
“The project has not been scrapped or postponed. It is still on. The new Dubai Zoo would come up in DubaiLand. And it would consist of different facilities for the animals. We would be coming out with the details in a couple of weeks,” said Bukhash.
Earlier reports had said that the zoo project had been postponed for the the third time in the last six years.
The municipality first decided to build a new zoo at Mushrif Park in 2003. But then the project did not take off. In November 2005, the municipality again stated that the zoo would be built at a new location which would be an extension of Mushrif Park. Earlier, Bukhash had also declared that the construction of the new zoo would start by the latter half of this year.
The new zoo at DubaiLand will be built over an area of 350 acres. It will features like camel safari, zoo safari, night zoo and other recreational and educative activities for children. The officials have said that it would take one-and-a-half years to complete the the project. Source
