RTA to punish erring cab drivers
It’s going to be taxing times for erring cab drivers. That’s, if they refuse to carry passengers (whatever the destination), or misbehave with them.
So they better behave and be courteous with their passengers. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has made clear that a cab driver could soon be forced to sit out at home for 10 days in case of a complaint.
Senior RTA officials told Khaleej Times that the move comes in view of the increasing number of complaints against cab drivers for refusing to carry passengers to certain destinations, or, in some instances, misbehaving with them. The officials pointed out that a cab driver cannot refuse to take a passenger to any destination under any circumstances.
Instances of taxi drivers refusing to take passengers to some destinations have been reportedly on the rise with many commuters stating that the drivers also misbehaved with them on occasions. One common complaint is that most taxis simply refuse to carry passengers to Sharjah.
“There are so many examples. These drivers just refuse point blank when asked to go to Sharjah. I have faced situations when drivers say they do not bother about any complaints. Once, a driver said the complaints would be of no use and I was welcome to do what I wanted to,” said Sharjah resident Akansha Thakkar, who works at an office located on Shaikh Zayed Road. “We too understand that going to Sharjah is painful most of the times. But then we live in Sharjah and our workstation is in Dubai,” added Thakkar.
Commuters in Dubai too have often complained of drivers refusing to take passengers to places like Deira and Bur Dubai.
“Most of them just want to drive around places like Dubai Marina, Gardens etc. They bluntly refuse passengers who want to go to destinations like Bur Dubai and Deira,” said a Dubai resident.
However, RTA officials made clear that action was being taken against such drivers and that the new rule (10-day sit-out punishment) would be implemented shortly.
Abdul Aziz Malik, the CEO of Dubai Taxi Agency said, “In the current training system, we inform all new drivers of the fines and penalties they’d incur on such complaints. As for ill-treatment or refusal to carry passengers, we do inform them of the consequences.”
Malik added: “We at Dubai Taxi Agency have had strict rules for our drivers. They are penalised whenever we get any complaint from a passenger.” Source
