RTA plans bus service to GCC countries
People travelling from Dubai to the neighbouring emirates would soon enjoy the luxury of state-of-the-art buses. In addition, the RTA is considering to start international bus service connecting the GCC countries.
Senior officials of the Public Transport Agency of the RTA said the inter-emirate buses would have different luxurious facilities for the commuters.
The officials added that a total of 125 new buses would start operating on the inter-emirate routes by early next year.
These buses would connect Dubai to Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates.
“The Public Transport Agency has recently signed an agreement to procure more than 55 Volvo luxury buses. The total cost of these buses would be Dh128 million,” said an official in the Public Transport Agency.
Earlier, the RTA had stated that they would be running modern double-decker buses between Dubai and Sharjah. “The delivery of the double-decker buses would start in July this year. These buses would run between the different emirates and also locally in Dubai. By early next year, there would be a whole new fleet of buses touring Dubai and the neighbouring emirates,” the official added.
Essa Al Dossari, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, had recently confirmed that the RTA was contemplating to start new bus routes connecting the GCC countries. “The Agency is serious about the plan. But this would be done only after we strengthen the local bus routes and make it fully competent and concrete. But the project is under discussions,” he said. The officials added that the first batch of the new buses would start arriving by September this year. The RTA has already announced that a total number of 2,500 buses would be on the roads by 2009.
The officials added that they were in the process of constructing many bus stations. Presently, there are six new stations coming up at Jebel Ali, Al Quoz, Motor City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Jebel Ali Airport and Al Ghusais.
The number of people using inter-city buses has seen a rapid increase. Ten million commuters used the inter-city buses in 380,000 trips on 16 routes in 2007, they added. Source
