Dubai will soon have hybrid taxis, buses

Dubai streets will shortly see hybrid taxis and public buses. These taxis and buses will run on electricity for the first 60-km, considerably reducing fuel use and providing a pollution-free environment.

Hybrid vehicles use 2-mode hybrid engines that run on fuel and electricity.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with General Motors (GM) to initially have 10 environment-friendly hybrid vehicles in the emirate. The agreement was signed by Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the Board and executive director of RTA, and Terry Johnsson, president of General Motors, Middle East Operations.
The agreement comes as a first step in a comprehensive plan to reduce emissions resulting from vehicle exhaust systems and to make all vehicles in Dubai environment-friendly.
In January 2008, RTA will start an operational trial of 10 GM hybrid taxis, including five all-new Chevrolet Tahoes equipped with a 2-mode hybrid engine and 5 Chevrolet Malibus. The trial period will last for one year during which GM will provide technical training on safety and other aspects to 15 RTA technicians and 40 Dubai Taxi drivers.
If the trial period proves a success, public buses will be converted into hybrid ones, officials said.
Al Tayer said RTA was putting assiduous efforts to change the infrastructure of public transport and make it environment-friendly.
Last June, the RTA formed a team to work on the project of converting vehicles to the twin operational system of fuel and electricity so as to minimise gas emissions. Source
