Dubai hospitality sector to have 554 hotels by 2016 : Sulayem

Dubai's booming hospitality industry will remain on track of impressive growth levels and by 2016 the number of hotels and hotel apartments are set to rise by 29.2 per cent to 554 from 439 at present,the Director General of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), Khalid bin Sulayem, has disclosed.

In an interview to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), bin Sulayem said the DTCM's strategic plan envisages an increase in the room capacity of hotels and hotel apartments from 46,775 units now to 127,100 units by 2016, a growth of 171.2 per cent. The ambitious Bawadi tourism and leisure project will, when completed, have a big major boost to the industry.
''Under the plan, the number of hotels will be increased from 319 at present to 414 by the end of the plan in 2016 and rooms from 36,564 to 112,000.Hotel apartments complexes will surge from 120 to 140 and apartments from 10,211 to 15,000,'' he added.
He said revenues of the sector reached Dh 6.4 billion in the first half of the year.Revenues shot up from Dh 1.8 billion in 1996 to Dh 10.8 billion in 2006, a whopping growth of 500 per cent. Source
