25 million passengers in the first nine months at Dubai Airport
Dubai International Airport is heading for yet another successful year with passenger throughput reaching 25.4 million between January and September - a growth of more than 19% over the corresponding period in 2006. The airport handled some 21.33 million passengers between January and September last year.
August was the busiest month for the airport so far this year with 3,287,894 passengers passing through, while just over 3.08 million passengers were recorded in July. Growth-wise too July and August were on top with a comparative growth of 22.22% and 24.27% respectively over the corresponding period in 2006.
During the period under review, Dubai Cargo Village handled a total of 1,133,676 tonnes of cargo as compared to 1,020,581 tonnes in the first nine months of 2007, an increase of 11.08 per cent over the same period in 2006. July was the busiest month for the Cargo Village with 135,027 tonnes of cargo handled as compared to 111,677 tonnes in July 2006, a 20.91 per cent increase.
Aircraft movement at Dubai International Airport was increased, and registered a growth of 9.86% between January and September this year. The airport handled a total of 191,974 flights during the nine months ending September 2007, as against 174,751 flights in the corresponding period last year. July was the busiest period for the airport in terms of aircraft movement with over 21,705 flights, an increase of over 11 per cent compared to July 2006.
'Dubai International Airport has been growing at an average of 15% annually since 2000, and we expect the growth rate to pick up pace and climb further up over the coming years,' sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group, said.
He said that despite the rate and pace of growth, the airport has maintained the quality of its services to passengers, and has regularly been voted as one of the world's best facilities.
Dubai continues to grow and has positioned itself as the most preferred business and leisure destination in the region, thereby increasing manifold the significance of the role Dubai International Airport will play in the nation's overall development, Sheikh Ahmed said. The facility is connected to over 202 destinations through a network of 118 international airlines.
Sheikh Ahmed noted that considering the continuous growth in passenger throughout, the ongoing expansion project is appropriately timed. The expansion project, a major portion of which will open mid-2008, will be capable of handling up to 75 million passengers by 2010. Source
