DM begins works Dhs9.7 million park in Mirdif

Dubai Municipality has begun the works of a new Dhs9.7 million neighborhood park in Mirdif which will offer the area's residents some 15,500 square meters of place to relax and unwind.
Construction of the park, with a total area of 1.55 hectors is expected to last six months and the facility will be ready by February 2008, said Abdullah Al Najjar, Acting Director of General Projects Department at the municipality.
He said the park would meet requirements of the area's residents for recreational facilities. Palm trees will be planted to provide shade, and different types of shrubs and flowers will form a colorful ambiance.
"Dubai Municipality is keen to provide all means of recreation to the public and spread greenery in the city," Al Najjar said.

He added that the park would include several facilities and features such as play grounds for children of various age groups, a main play area consisting of football, basketball, volley-ball, and tennis courts, a main plaza with shaded sitting areas, and a vast green area.

"In designing the park, we have taken into consideration requirements of the people of special needs," he said.

The park would have a dedicated section for children in the age-groups of 2-5 and 6-12 years to play various games. Adults can perform their favourite sports in a fence-separated play ground. There will be a 325 meter long jogging track in the park.

Al Najjar, meanwhile, said the municipality is currently undertaking a study aimed at enhancing design criterion of residential parks and community facilities in Dubai. Residential parks are small parks that range in the area from one to two hectors and located in packed neighborhoods while the community facilities are small games and resting areas with no greenery.

The study seeks to redefine the residential parks and analyze the actual needs of each neighborhood for recreational and sports facilities.

"The needs of residents will be identified based on the variety of populace (such as kids, teens, adults, and old people) as well as the type of residential units (detached villas, attached or semi-attached villas, multi-story apartments?etc). This will help serve each neighborhood with unique recreational facilities," he said.

He noted that the ultimate objective is to offer 2.5 square meters of greenery 1.5 square meters of play-ground and 1.5 square meters of community facility to each individual.

"In short, the greenery strategy of Dubai Municipality aims at providing 5.5 square meters of recreational facility to every individual in the emirate," he said. Source
