Constitutional amendments being discussed: Al Ghurair

Discussions and debates are going on within the Federal National Council(FNC) and other political circles in UAE about making amendments to the constitution of the country.At a press conference held in Dubai on the occasion of the end of the first season of ordinary sessions of the 14th Legislative Chapter, FNC Speaker Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair said that there were no impediments in front of the Council in making amendments to the articles of UAE's constitution."We understand where the amendments are needed, in order to achieve the best interests of the nation and its people," Al Ghurair said.He reiterated that the government of UAE, led by Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum welcomes any constitutional change provided that it fulfills the paramount interests of the people of UAE.Al Ghurair said that it is not possible now to predict how long the transitional period will last for FNC to begin electing all its members through direct elections.He stressed that President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and Their Highness the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of emirates perceive well the importance of a gradual transition towards better democratic practices as it will suit the traditions and the national interest of UAE. The leadership of the country is always keen about this process.The First season of 14th Legislative Chapter's plenary sessions was inaugurated by President Sheikh Khalifa on 12th February this year.
