More People Retiring To Dubai, Embassy Figures Show
While the traditional sunshine destinations such as Spain, Portugal and France are still attracting the majority of the UKs overseas retirees, recent statistics released by the British Embassy have shown that an increasing number of over 50s are looking beyond Europe to Dubai for their post-work years. The number of British expatriates living in Dubai has doubled to 100,000 in the last four years according the Embassy, and most of these, it seems, are retirees keen to cash in on the city's property boom and high standard of service and living.
“Dubai is a tax haven and one of very few places in the region that has introduced freehold property laws for foreign investors,” says Peter Riddoch, CEO of DAMAC Properties. “It is also a city dedicated to convenience, leisure and high service standards. Property prices start from as little as £65,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and there is no end of different property types and locations to choose from.”
The unstable demise of the UK state pension and the under-performance of stock market investment means that, for many, retirement in the UK will be less economically comfortable than expected; under these circumstances, Dubai, with its tax-free living, affordable property and strong return on investment, makes a convincing case for the desert city.
