Parking fee payment through mobiles soon

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will soon be implementing a system for motorists to pay parking fee by using their mobile phones.
Senior RTA officials told Khaleej Times that discussions were in progress with some companies and the best and the most convenient system available will be chosen.

Sultan Musabbeh Al Kutbi, Director of the Parking Department, said, “Yes, we would be implementing a new system of parking this year. People would be able to pay through their mobile phones. Presently, the RTA is considering having the most convenient of systems for the motorists. Before the launch of any system, we would launch an awareness campaign for the same.”

However, the existing parking payment option will continue as the new system would be just an option for the motorists.

The official added that the mobile phone parking payment system would be one of the options for the motorists. “We are not going to remove the existing parking meters after the new system is installed. The new system would be one of the options for the motorists. The normal payment option will stay available,” added Kutbi.

Recently, a company named Valtrans, a subsidiary of the Al Habtoor Transportation system had introduced a “personal parking meter” which motorists could operate from inside their cars. Under this system, a device is fitted inside the cars and people can pay for parking by using a prepaid card. The system was later rechristened as PIAF.

The official stated that the RTA was exploring a lot of new ideas. “We are getting new ideas and offers for many products. The PIAF system was demonstrated for the RTA recently. The department is always seeking the latest technologies that could be useful, convenient and hassle-free for the public. The PIAF system has not been approved by the RTA so far. But we would be considering it in the future parking systems planning as we are focusing on mobile payment implementation in the mean time,” said Kutbi. Source
