Gulf Automobiles, the country's first automobile manufacturing venture became the star attraction at the Middle East Manufacturing Exhibition (MEMEX) which kicked off in Abu Dhabi yesterday. The Middle East's premier manufacturing trade show was opened with the participation of exhibitors from 11 countries including Germany, Belgium, UK, Italy, Taiwan, Korea, China, Iran, India and UAE .
Opening the exhibition, CEO of the Higher Corporation of Specialised Economic Zones (ZonesCorp) Engineer Jabber Al Kheili said that ZonesCorp has become a driving force in the UAE manufacturing sector. He also said that he has been so impressed by the high quality of the first vehicle being manufactured in UAE.
'Kheili has been a great supporter of the company since day one and has visited our factory to see production,' said Engineer Ali Baker, plant manager for Gulf Automobile, based in Abu Dhabi's Industrial City 1. 'We are proud of the faith he has shown in our vehicles.' With a starting price of AED 36,000 (USD 9,805) Gulf Automobile company began manufacturing pick-ups in May this year, at the rate of around 50 per month and expects to produce between 3,000 and 5,000 vehicles in 2008, the company said in a statement.
Currently, 25 per cent of the vehicle contents are locally manufactured with the proportion to increase to around 40 per cent in coming years. Heavy and light trucks as well as fork lifts are also planned by the company.
Main exhibit sectors at MEMEX, which will last until 12th December, include Machinery and Machine Tools, Process, Control and Instrumentation, Welding, Joining and Heat Treatment, Automation and IT sector. Country pavilions from UK and Taiwan feature leading exporters of machinery and machine tools. The event which will last until 12th December will also provide networking prospects for machinery and machine tool sales encompassing Gulf and global markets, according the organizers.(WAM)
