Scholarships for Emirati, expat students mooted

The educational body that supervises private and public education in Dubai is considering offering scholarships to Emirati students and, for the first time, wards of long-time expatriate residents to pursue higher education in Dubai or abroad.

According to Dr Warren Fox, Higher Education Consultant to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the authority is drawing up several plans as part of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 to develop an educated workforce.
Observing that Dubai would need an educated workforce for continued development and expansion, Fox told Khaleej Times recently, “We are looking at possible scholarship programmes to support Emiratis who wish to study abroad or on campuses in Dubai.
“We are also looking at extending scholarships to children of expatriates, who are long-time residents of Dubai and are part of the economy and the future. We are exploring ways by which we could assist them in higher education if they remain here and contribute to the emirate’s economic growth.”
While the authority does want to increase the number of Emiratis in the private sector, Fox said, “We realise that Dubai is so large that we need to be considering the education of expatriates and we are exploring ways to support their higher education if they remain in Dubai.”
However, he said, it was just a proposal at the planning stages and would take concrete shape in days to come.
According to Fox, KHDA would also consider regulating the higher education institutes in the free zones in Dubai. “We are examining some quality assurance processes for institutions in the free zones. We will work with the institutions, their home countries and the accrediting processes in those countries to ensure quality.” Source
