Dubai’s transport authority plans to make what is being billed as the single biggest order of buses in the world as it looks to help ease congestion across the city.
Speaking at a public transport conference in Dubai, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman Mattar Al Tayer said the authority is to purchase just over 1,600 new buses, bringing the total number of buses in service to 2,500 by 2009.
“It is the largest single deal for buses ever made in the world and is part of the RTA's ambitious plan to develop mass transit system with a view to increasing the number of people using public transport to at least 30 per cent by 2009,” said Al Tayer, quoted UAE daily Gulf News.
“We are heading towards an integrated public transport system once the Dubai Metro project starts operation in September 2009. All modes of transport, including public buses, marine transport, metro and taxis will be interlinked to ensure smooth journey for passengers.”
Dubai’s public transport infrastructure is currently undergoing a massive overhaul in an effort to reduce traffic on the cities increasingly congested roads and cater for the emirate's rapidly expanding population, which is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.
In addition to Dubai Metro and the huge increase in buses, the RTA is also in the process of revamping the emirate’s taxi service, expanding its fleet, reviewing drivers’ working hours and establishing new taxi stations.
The RTA is also carrying out an extensive road building and improvement programme, which includes the construction of a new 14-lane Garhoud Bridge and another tunnel under Dubai Creek. Source
