RTA opens Al Maktoum, Al Sofouh Al Barsha bridges

The Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced opening of Al Maktoum and Al Sofouh Al Barsha bridges for traffic, following completion of the expansion works.

The expansion of Al Maktoum Bridge is part of an integrated plan to increase number of lanes on Dubai Creek to 38 in order to ease and increase the traffic flow in two directions between the two parts of Dubai.
Meanwhile, the RTA opened Al Sofouh Al Barsha on Sheikh Zayed Road for traffic. The bridge comprises two lanes each side and links Al Barsha and Sofouh districts.
The opening of the two bridges is in line with the strategic plans of the RTA, which conform to the Dubai Strategic Plan. The plan includes the road network development, whereby the roads will be increased by 500Km and lanes on the creek to 47 by 2008 and to 100 lanes by 2020. Ring roads, intersections will be constructed and traffic smart system will be installed.
Engineer Maitha bin Udai, Executive Director of the RTA said "these strategic projects reflect endeavour of the RTA to ease traffic jams on the Dubai emirate roads to ensure easy and safe transport for all through execution of series of new projects and face-lifting of a number of major roads to improve their capacity and efficiency".
She added that the projects would meet growth, urban and population expansion.
"The expansion work done at Al Maktoum Bridge includes widening of roads leading to the bridge, and widening the access to the bridge at Umm Harir Road from two to three lanes from Bur Dubai side. This will increase the capacity of the bridge and ease congestion for traffic coming to the bridge from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Deira", Maitha said.
She noted that the improvement works and widening of the bridge also includes increasing the number of lanes from Deira to Bur Dubai side from four to six lanes, indicating that this has been done through utilising the existing space between the movable parts of the bridge.
Maitha said Al Maktoum bridge capacity could accommodate 250, 000 vehicles daily, and 9,500 vehicles per hour at rush hours.
She added that the work is running on as scheduled in improving roads at Al Sofouh area, which started at the end of May 2006 with an estimated cost of Dh210 million, indicating that the project includes constructing a tunnel parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Sofouh Road, linking Umm Suqeim with Knowledge Village, as well as, a bridge across Sheikh Zayed Road.
Maitha said that the bridge, which links Al Barsha area with Al Sofouh area, consists of two lanes in each direction.
"This Bridge is a vital part of a massive project extending 11 km in total. It includes roads, a tunnel, traffic signals, roads lighting, protecting and diverting utility lines, as well as, improving roads network at Al Sofouh area. The project will be completed in full by the end of November 2007" she announced. Source
