The Dubai Cares campaign came to a close at midnight, Saturday, having raised AED 1,738,345,000 as of 1 pm Saturday.
Launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the campaign raised the money during its 8-week run to help educate one million children in poor countries around the world.
Effective midnight 10 November, all donation channels including SMS, bank transfers, donation boxes across several Dubai malls, direct contributions and sale of memorabilia ended.
Dubai Cares is based on a long-term strategy of investing in community-based, education programmes to build the human capacities of some of the poorest countries in the world. The donations will be used to build and renovate schools, train teachers, provide teaching materials, sport and recreation equipment, offer scholarships, organize school feeding programmes and encourage physical education.
The campaign will be recognized for bringing together individuals, communities, government departments and corporations in an amazing display of communal spirit within Dubai?s multicultural landscape.
Some of the main highlights of the campaign includes Sama Dubai?s purchase of a shirt worn by Sheikh Mohammed when he lead the UAE national team to victory in a 2002 horse endurance world championship in Spain, paying AED16 million, the highest price for any item sold by the auction.
An auction organized by Zabeel Investments sold a cast of the hand prints of Sheikh Mohammed and six of his children for AED80 million, with the highest bid going to Dubai International Financial Centre.
The largest donation during the campaign was made by DP World, which gave Dubai Cares AED260 million.
UAE National Yousef Yaqoub Yousef, Transactions and Branches Manager, Al Islami Financial Services of Dubai Islamic Bank, cancelled his wedding reception, donating the cost of the wedding - AED150,000 - to the campaign.
As ambassadors of the Dubai Cares campaign, the sons and daughters of Sheikh Mohammed, worked tirelessly to garner support beyond domestic borders, and toured several impoverished countries to gain on-ground information, meet government officials and students to personally review their requirements. The Comoros Islands, Yemen, Djibouti, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Chad and Sudan were some of the countries that the Dubai Cares flag traveled to.
The Dubai Cares campaign was launched by Sheikh Mohammed on 19 September to channel Dubai's philanthropic efforts towards education in poor countries around the world. The campaign is Dubai?s contribution to a global drive to help countries achieve their U.N. Millennium Development Goals of providing primary education to every child by 2015. It is founded on the belief that education is the best long-term solution to poverty and an effective engine for national development. Source
