Air passenger traffic between the Arab world and other regions registered a steady growth of 11.8 per cent in the first three quarters of 2007.
According to quarterly statistical bulletin of Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO), passenger traffic growth within the Arab world increased by 4.4 per cent during January-September 2007 period as compared to corresponding period in 2006.
"This increase led to a total growth of passenger traffic in the Arab world of 9.3 per cent during the first three quarters of 2007 compared to the same period in 2006," the bulletin said.
Arab market inter-regional passenger traffic growth stayed below 10 per cent with North America and Europe during the first three quarters of 2007. However, it recorded 20 per cent traffic growth with sub-saharan Africa and over 20 per cent with Latin America during first nine months of 2007.
The bulletin further said Arab air transport market grew in the second quarter of 2007 by 16.78 per cent compared to same quarter in 2006. Growth with world regions reached 18.36 per cent, and within the Arab world 13.48 per cent as compared to second quarter in 2006.
Arab airports statistics: In second quarter of 2007, passenger numbers in most of the Arab airports reached 40.5 million passengers, registering an increase of 13.5 per cent over same quarter in 2006.
Eight Arab airports reported an increase in passengers above 20 per cent in this quarter, among which three scored an increase above 45 per cent. However, four airports reported a decrease in passengers.
Dubai remains on top with the handling of over eight million passengers during the second quarter this year followed by Jeddah and Doha.
Cargo and aircraft movement scored an increase of 11.5 per cent and 11.8 per cent respectively in second quarter of 2007 compared to same quarter last year.
Arab airlines operations overview: In second quarter of 2007, Arab airlines carried 15.6 million passengers including 12.5 million on international routes.
Arab airlines recorded slight decline in passengers on domestic routes during the quarter as they carried 3.1 million passengers on domestic routes in second quarter of 2007 compared to 3.3 million passengers in same quarter last year.
However, growth on international routes reached 14.5 per cent, and on domestic routes declined 4.1 per cent compared to second quarter in 2006, leading to an aggregate growth of 10.2 per cent.
Arab airlines fleet: In July-August 2007, Arab airlines acquired 65 new aircraft and phased out 38. The new aircraft were divided as follows: 18.5 per cent freighters, 32.3 per cent wide body, 40 per cent narrow body, and 9.2 per cent regional.
Average age per unit aircraft scored 7.93 years while average capacity per unit aircraft scored 214 seats, the bulletin said.
Market share: Airbus gained market share which reached 51 per cent. However, Boeing's market share declined to 36 per cent in third quarter of 2007 from 40 per cent in first quarter of 2007. ATR, Bombardier, Embraer, and other manufacturers market share decreased to 13 per cent in Q3 this year compared to 15 per cent in second quarter of 2007.
As of October 30, 2007, Arab carriers had 328 aircraft on order, and signed letters of Intent for another 66 aircraft. Source

ATR, Bombardier, Embraer, and other manufacturers market share decreased to 13 per cent in Q3 this year compared to 15 per cent in second quarter of 2007.
