Dubai Gets Ready for Tram System

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has appointed Systra, a US company specializing in rail and public transport consulting, as consultants for the Al-Sofouh tram system, which is designed to cater to the commuting needs of around 180,000 residents and 220,000 visitors to Dubai.
Proposed to run from Dubai Marina and the Jumeirah Beach residence via Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village to Madinat Jumeirah, Mall of the Emirates and Burj Al-Arab, the Al-Sofouh system will not only be an effective solution to ease traffic congestion but will become a major tourist attraction in the Emirate.
“The contractor will be on board this coming December and is expected to commence construction on the project in January, which will take 21-27 months. The first phase of this project is scheduled to be completed in September 2009,” said Abdulredha, director of planning and design at the Rail Agency.
“Currently around 19 stations are being planned for the 14-km tram stretch out of which three are multimodal interchange stations with the Red Line; these include the Mall of the Emirates, Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers. The Metro stations will be equipped with travellators to ease walking between the tram and the Red Line.
“The tram network will also be in close proximity to Palm Jumeirah to facilitate a future connection to the Mono Rail which is in progress by Nakheel,” he added.
The feasibility study has been completed and the preliminary designs study commenced in June this year. The trams will accommodate 5,200 passengers per hour per direction and will be integrated with the metro stations as well as the bus network.
The RTA is working at full speed on meeting the demands of a rapidly growing population (and their dependence on cars) and have stated that the rail projects are the starting point for a wider reaching network that will eventually encompass the entire city.Source
