DOHMS to deliver high quality pre-nuptial tests

As of tomorrow, Sunday, around 16 health centres of the Dubai Department for Health and Medical Services (DOHMS) will begin delivering pre-marital medical tests for certain communicable and dangerous diseases for both nationals and expatriate residents to spare next generations from health complications of genetic disorders.
''The launch of this service reflects DOHMS' proper care for assessing health demands and requirements of would-be husband and wife,''said Dr. Ibtihal Darwish, Director of Primary Healthcare, DOHMS.
She indicated that a taskforce was set up early this year to design/tailor an integrated programme for a series of pre-marital medical tests and formulate a common strategy between the authorities concerned whose main goal is to control most common blood and genetic diseases and early screening of certain contagious diseases with the aim of curing them.

Dr. Rafea Al Rai, a Family Medicine Specialist and Head of the pre-nuptial medical tests Taskforce, said the programme aimed at providing new high quality health services and spreading the public health culture and education.
The diseases that couples will be screened for include thalassaemia, sickle cell anemia, hereditary diseases, STDs/HIV, tuberculosis and other chest diseases as well as Hepatitis B and C.
