The sponsor, and not the labourer, has to pay the fees to cancel or reguralise the status of the illegal worker during the amnesty, a senior official of the Ministry of Labour (MoL) has clarified.
Humaid bin Deemas, assistant under-secretary at the MoL told Khaleej Times yesterday that the companies or sponsors had to pay all the fees at the MoL to complete the formalities regarding cancellation of the visas of the illegal workers or for transferring their sponsorship.
However, as the amnesty period ends on September 2, all the formalities required to reguralise the illegals’ status had to be completed before that period.
Khaleej Times has received many complaints from workers alleging that the sponsors were making them pay the fees for transferring sponsorship.
Earlier, the Minister of Labour, Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi, had affirmed that the workers were not to pay any fees related to sponsorship transfers, or for issuing of labour cards or health insurance cards. Source
