Law to combat human trafficking to be revised

The UAE has reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking and providing protection for victims of the crime, according to a top official.
"Every effort is being undertaken on a federal level to fight human trafficking and provide protection for victims of this heinous crime," said Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs.
He was speaking following a meeting of the UAE National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking held at the Presidential Court in Abu Dhabi on Monday.
The committee's discussion focused on a review of new regulatory and coordination procedures, improvement of data availability, pending cases and prevention measures.
The committee, headed by Dr Gargash, also focused on communication mechanisms between local and federal government authorities to monitor and track incidents of human rights abuse. The availability of information and data relating to human trafficking, with a primary focus on ensuring the credibility of the sources and accuracy of data presented, were also tabled for discussion.
Joint mechanism
Dr Gargash informed members of the Committee about the UAE Cabinet's recent resolution authorising the committee to act as the official authority handling international requests, inquiries and delegations related to trafficking of persons. The committee will now formulate a joint mechanism to connect the concerned local and federal authorities and receive and process each international request.
As part of its responsibility to promote awareness of the issue and educate the public, the committee discussed a plan for implementing a series of workshops and other ways of disseminating information to specialists working in the field of law enforcement, health and social services as well as education. The committee has discussed in detail a proposed training programme for police officers and public prosecutors in cooperation with Ministry of Interior on identification of human trafficking violations and treatment of victims.
Members of the committee praised the recent decision by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish a foundation for the protection of women and children in the emirate. Dr Gargash said the launch of the new shelter in Dubai is a very important initiative to provide protection and a support system for victims, which is an important component in the comprehensive fight to eliminate these crimes.
