GCC Trade Marks Law amended: MoE

The Technical Committee on Trade Marks at the Gulf Cooperation Council , GCC, has agreed on instituting amendments to the unified GCC Trade Marks Law which regularizes the registration and protection of trade marks and which has been approved by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Federal Decree No 52/2007.The decree is in consistency with GCC leaders' recommendations on the unified economic process which is aimed at unifying economic and trading policies and systems in GCC states."During the 27th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC, held in Riyadh in 2006, the law was approved as an obligatory legislation to be adopted by all GCC members states six months after the issuance of executive charter", said Mohammed Ahmed Bin Abdulaziz Al Shehhi, Undersecretary for Planning Sector at UAE Ministry of Economy."The Technical Committee at GCC drafted the Law which provides for GCC member states' commitment to international treaties", he added.The unified GCC Trade Marks Law defines words and phrases relating to trade marks, the meaning of a trade mark, the conditions and procedures of registering a trade mark, the authorization to use a trade mark, trade marks of the bodies and entities, the penalties for violation of a trade mark as well as the role of the GCC's Commercial Cooperation Committee in issuing the executive charter of the law and its right to institute further explanations and amendments.
