The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has said that the applicants for international driving licences must be either citizens or residents of the UAE and should have valid UAE driving licences.
This was stated by Maitha Bin Adai, the CEO of the RTA, after a recent meeting with the officials of Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE.
According to the rules, the international driving license will be valid for a period of one year from the date of issuance.
Bin Adai said that the meeting has been a fruitful one. She added that the two parties agreed on continuing issuing the International driving licences through post office branches in the UAE. They have also agreed to stop the issuance of licensces through the Internet and to elaborate an appropriate mechanism to fulfill the needs of those who wish to obtain an International License without conflicting with the UAE laws in this regard.
The Auto Club would notify the licensing department about what kind of licenses are being issued within a period not exceeding three months in order to enable the department to investigate the reliability of licensing procedures and monitor any irregularities that may occur in this regard.
With regard to the issuance of Trip Licence, Bin Adai said, “It has been agreed that the department of licensing will issue the transfer certificate upon a Trip Ticket issued by the UAE Automobile Club which carries the logos of RTA and the Club as well. The two parties also agreed further cooperation between each other and to facilitate the procedures governing the work in all aspects of common interest. The meeting also discussed the possibility to permit the licensing of vehicles which is imported with a steering wheel on the right side if the models are not exceeding five years and are under a condition of a conversion.
