Experts recommend public transports

The continuing growth in population, economic revival, peoples' indifference to public transport systems, are among reasons which may contribute to the the traffic congestion problem in the years to come. Though an unavoidable global phenomenon, the traffic congestion can be brought under control with the adoption of integrative and innovative plans and measures, according to lawmakers and experts in the country.Shedding light on the alarming issue of traffic bottlenecks, an Arabic daily published a survey report and quoted officials as saying that the culture of using public transport facilities should be encouraged among the people.'Al Itihad' cited figures from recent studies and said that over a million vehicles ply the Dubai roads more than three million times a day. Considering the fact that the population in Dubai will grow to 4 million by year 2020 the vehicles will have to ply more than 13 million times a day.Former Chairman of the Sharjah Consultative Council Ahmad Khalfan Al Suweidi said that the traffic congestion is creating negative psychological effects in individuals and this in turn affects the production at work-places.The report described traffic congestion as a levy imposed by the constructional growth and economic revival, and quoted senior officials as proposing more roads interlinking the various emirates, more metro lines and awareness creation encouraging a culture of using public transports.
