Speaking to a local contractor last week about the challenges he currently faces in the industry, the prime concern he claimed to be causing him countless sleepless nights was finding skilled labour. His exact words were: "Securing skilled labour is a nightmare, bringing them over here is a nightmare, and keeping them with you is another nightmare."
Securing skilled labour is a nightmare, bringing them over here is a nightmare, and keeping them with you is another nightmare.
The contractor was quick to distinguish himself from counterparts who were struggling to retain staff. While their labourers were taking holidays and not coming back due to their home markets now being a more attractive place to work, or were being blatantly poached by anxious contenders, his had apparently remained loyal over a number of years.

He claimed that the best way to keep staff was to "manage by objectives, not by orders, pay close attention to their needs and provide them with a safe working environment". But the most basic retention tactic, he said, is providing workers with a decent place to live. Contractors in the region looking to source enough labour to stay with them for the duration of at least one project ought to take note. Source
