An environmental rating system for buildings in the UAE will follow the USA Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) model. The details of the much-awaited rating system are currently being finalised by the Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC). It is expected to be an adaptation of the US system, taking into consideration the Indian LEED system, but adapted to fully consider the environmental conditions in the UAE.
The system will take account of local best practice plus federal and regional laws, with the most stringent of the current standards being included. A pilot programme will be launched initially to identify any areas of concern and enable any problems to be removed before the system becomes fully operational. The system being developed is intended as a long-term benchmarking solution, however it will be continually reviewed and revised to account for technological advances.
The rating system is intended to be an instrument for the construction industry to focus on what is best for the environment. It will include everything from sustainable sites and energy efficiency to indoor environmental quality; it also includes activities during the construction phase of projects. Source
