Minimum highway speed set at 60km in Dubai

A minimum speed limit of 60km per hour is being introduced on a string of major highways in Dubai.
Motorists who fail to comply with the new rule will risk fines - although the exact penalties have not been decided yet. The minimum speed limit will apply on highways where the existing speed limit is 100km per hour or more.
"The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority [RTA] will soon start installing signs to educate motorists on the minimum speed limit on highways," said a senior official.
The rule applies when there is no congestion and there is enough room to drive a car at 60km per hour and above. The date of enforcement has not been finalised.
In a Gulf News report last month, Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, had called for a minimum speed limit on highways.
Maitha Obaid Bin Udai, Chief Executive Officer of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, said the RTA had conducted studies on the impact on traffic of slow driving.
"A big difference in the speeds of vehicles is one of the major causes of accidents when someone driving at the maximum speed limit has to swerve quickly to avoid a slow moving car in the fast or middle lane," she said.
Meanwhile, speed governors will be installed in vehicles conducting desert safaris. The announcement comes just days after a fatal crash involving a safari vehicle, although the cause of the crash is still unknown.
Officials at the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) said the exact speed limit will be decided soon. Dubai taxis have been limited to a maximum speed of 120km per hour for several months.
DTCM spokesman Mohammad Abdul Mannan said the move follows other measures aimed at improving safety standards, such as the requirement that vehicles have GPS equipment and a first aid kit. "The vehicles will have to be fitted with the speed governors at police departments," he said.
Alert: Don't go too slow on these roads
These are some of the highways on which the minimum speed limit will apply:
Shaikh Zayed Road
Ras Al Khor Road
Al Khail Road
Emirates Road
Al Ittihad Road
Dubai Outer Bypass Road
Dubai-Hatta Road
Dubai-Al Ain Road
