Dubai's Arab Media Group has signed a preliminary deal with Virgin Radio to launch the station in Dubai."We've signed a memorandum of understanding with Virgin," AMG boss Abdullatif Al Sayegh told ArabianBusiness.com."We haven't finalised the deal but it should be done over the next few weeks. It's looking very positive. We're about to talk about financials and figures."
"I don't think any radio stations in the UAE or Arab world compete with the Virgin brand," he added. "Virgin is going to bring a lot of quality to radio."The deal is thought to have been three or four months in the making. The new station could fall under AMG's Arabian Radio Network, which currently operates eight stations, according to the AMG website.Al Sayegh says that the company is "not quite sure" whether Virgin Radio would replace one of the existing stations or be an addition to them.Virgin radio started in the UK in the 1990s and in 2001 established Virgin Radio Asia. It runs stations in Bangkok, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), and plans to shortly launch in Kolkata."Virgin Radio International is now exploring opportunities in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe and expects to launch many more stations over the coming years," says a statement on its website.
