Radical changes in labour law mooted

The draft of a revised labour law authorises the minister to propose to the Cabinet minimum wages and cost of living allowances in general or in a specific area, profession or category of workers.
Dr Ali Bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, however, repeatedly ruled out any plan to fix minimum wages.
The draft, published at www.uaelabourlaw.net, provides for a maternity leave for women who completed one year of service of 45 days with paid salary to be followed by 55 days unpaid leave, provided that not less than 42 days shall be taken after the confinement. Some 45 more days leave can be taken in the event of any medically approved post confinement complications.
"A worker may not be forced to buy any food or commodities from certain shops or produced by the employer," the draft states.
