Dubai public hospitals go commercial

Four public hospitals in Dubai are to be converted into profit-making organisations under a long-term overhaul of the emirate's public healthcare system, according to a report today. The move from Dubai's Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) would aim to improve hospital services at Rashid Hospital, Al Wasl Hospital, Maktoum Hospital and Dubai Hospital. The hospitals' present facilities only generate enough money to cover 20% of their expenditure, according to a Dohms official.Ahmad Ali Oboud, director of finance at the Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services, told Gulf News the initiative would help improve services at the four Dohms hospitals, which have been operating at a loss.
"We're giving a certain time for government hospitals to break even the costs," he was quoted as saying. "We need to make up the 80 per cent in the coming years. The hospitals will have to run themselves."The move would be the biggest change in the public health care system since 2000, when free healthcare became restricted to UAE nationals only.Last week ArabianBusiness.com reported on a similar change in Saudi Arabia, where government hospitals in run by the Health Ministry in the Kingdom would be transformed into public corporations in a bid to improve health services and overcome financial difficulties.
