Construction on the Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB), set to be the world's largest, is at a non-stop pace to make it by the first phase deadline. One runway is almost finished with five more to go for the 2008 deadline. When completed the airport is expected to shuttle 120 million passengers and 12 million tons of cargo annually.
The airport is estimated to span 86 square miles, with an area size a third bigger than England's Heathrow and ten times larger than that of the current Dubai International Airport.
The construction on the new airport is a part of the Dubai World Central (DWC) mega-project, which will include a regional logistics hub, plus commercial and residential areas.
All in all, total infrastructure estimates predict that $33 billion will be spent for the project.
Although the new airport was not made to replace the other aviation hub, the existing location is only 25 miles north of the new development.
